Safe beginnings
In 1998 a small group of community-minded people decided to develop socially inclusive art programmes, to utilise the skills of the local community and to work alongside fellow artists who also valued artistic developments in the public sphere. In partnership with Art Skills and Park Hill Primary School, the group’s first public mosaic was unveiled on Park Road, Liverpool 8 that April.
In December 2000 the not-for-profit Liverpool SAFE Productions Ltd was incorporated, SAFE being an acronym for “Supporting arts for everyone” and this remains the company’s mission today.
Safe and Children
Over the past 10 years the company’s work has focused on children and youth who all too often experience social, economic and environmental disadvantage. A robust mix of educational project themes, curriculum-based involvement, co-production of art works and community-based delivery has proved exceptionally fruitful for everyone concerned. Every project shows that inclusive public arts can and do inspire peoples’ sense of belonging, confidence and self esteem whilst improving levels of motivation and general wellbeing.
The Art of Community
SAFE arts programmes have often creatively explored themes of environment, local history, urban and community regeneration and more personally-held hopes, dreams and aspirations. Participants rediscover their innate creativity and sense of playful wonder, they learn new skills through supportive facilitation, informally share their knowledge and enjoy opportunities to participate equitably regardless of age, background or presumed capability. For many disaffected people, taking part in the creative process helps to foster trust and a more positive experience of citizenship.
